Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed support for comments made by U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump regarding his desire to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Putin described Trump’s statements as “sincere” while wrapping up the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, which focused on the collaboration of developing economies.
During the summit, Putin cautioned the West, stating it is an “illusion” to believe that Russia could be defeated on the battlefield. He emphasized that any future peace agreement would need to acknowledge Russia’s control over significant territories in Ukraine. This sentiment echoed calls from several of Russia’s key allies at the summit for an end to hostilities in Ukraine.
Trump has consistently expressed skepticism towards the extensive financial aid provided by Washington to Ukraine. He has claimed that if elected, he could resolve the conflict within hours. Putin acknowledged Trump’s remarks, saying, “He spoke about his desire to do everything to end the conflict in Ukraine. I think he is being sincere. Of course, we welcome statements like this, whoever they come from.”
