Azerbaijan has expressed its interest in becoming a member of BRICS, an international organization that is gaining significant influence in global politics and the economy. According to Ayhan Hajizadeh, head of the press service at Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry, the country formally applied for membership on April 2, 2024.
Initially founded in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, BRICS expanded to include South Africa in 2011. As of January 1, 2024, the bloc welcomed new members including Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, and the UAE. Although Saudi Arabia is not an official member, it actively participates in BRICS events.
Hajizadeh emphasized that BRICS now accounts for over 30% of the world’s landmass, 43% of its population, and contributes 26% to global GDP. The organization’s member nations possess vast natural resources, large domestic markets, and advanced technological industries. He highlighted the appeal of BRICS, noting its commitment to principles such as non-interference, equality, and mutual benefit in international cooperation.
The growing interest in BRICS is evident as more than 30 countries have submitted applications to join, further cementing its position as a key player in world affairs.
