EU Announces New Partnership with Ethiopia
In a significant move under the Global Gateway investment strategy, the European Union has unveiled its Multiannual Indicative Programme (MIP) with Ethiopia for 2024-2027. The initiative, launched by European Commissioner for International Partnerships Jutta Urpilainen and Ethiopia’s Finance Minister Ahmed Shide, outlines key cooperation priorities focused on peace building, reconstruction, and green transition.
Key Priorities and Funding
The MIP, valued at €650 million, targets three main areas:
- Green Deal (€260 million): Aims to support policies and structural reforms driving Ethiopia’s green transition through innovative financing and private sector investment.
- Human Development (€228 million): Focuses on expanding aid for essential services and rebuilding infrastructure affected by recent conflicts.
- Governance and Peacebuilding (€156 million): Includes efforts in economic governance to foster a private sector-driven economy, promote democratic governance and human rights, and enhance social cohesion and peacebuilding initiatives.
Strategic Goals and Implementation
Commissioner Urpilainen emphasised the EU’s commitment to Ethiopia’s peace process, transitional justice, and macro-economic recovery. The partnership will involve active political dialogue and policy exchanges to ensure effective implementation. Depending on the progress, the EU plans to expand its support, aiming to restore and strengthen its strategic engagement with Ethiopia.
