Colombia’s Push for BRICS Membership and Strengthened Relations with Russia
During his recent visit to Moscow, Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo confirmed the country’s interest in joining the BRICS group, signaling a strategic move to expand international alliances and explore new economic opportunities. Murillo’s talks in Moscow with Russian officials also centered on strengthening bilateral ties ahead of the 90th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations in 2025.
BRICS Membership: A Path to New Economic Alliances
Colombia’s pursuit of BRICS membership is part of a broader strategy to enhance its global standing and gain access to the financial resources and collaborative platforms offered by the group. During his visit, Murillo emphasized ongoing discussions with the Shanghai-based BRICS New Development Bank, led by Dilma Rousseff. The partnership with the bank presents potential funding avenues for Colombia’s infrastructure, development, and sustainable projects, boosting its economy and international profile.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations with Russia
The visit also aimed to solidify ties with Russia, with both nations planning to revive their bilateral commission, focusing on areas such as trade, science, and economics. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov highlighted that the countries are committed to working together more closely, with special emphasis on cultural and academic exchanges. As part of these efforts, Murillo was honored with the title of Emeritus Professor by a Russian university.
“Colombia is a promising partner for Russia in Latin America. Our relations are based on mutual respect, trust, and cooperation. In 2025, we will mark 90 years of diplomatic relations,” the Kremlin said in a statement.
Geopolitical Talks: Ukraine, Middle East, and Climate Change
The discussions also touched on global conflicts, with Murillo reiterating Colombia’s readiness to mediate the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He emphasized the importance of diplomatic dialogue to achieve peace, offering Colombia’s assistance should it be needed. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy criticized Colombia for not attending a recent peace summit in Switzerland, calling for Colombia to take a more active role in restoring justice in the conflict.
Additionally, the two countries addressed pressing environmental issues, with Colombia seeking Russia‘s support for international climate initiatives. Both nations discussed potential collaborations within multilateral forums such as the United Nations to promote global environmental efforts.
Colombia’s Strategic Position in Global Politics
Colombia’s pursuit of BRICS membership and its strengthened ties with Russia reflect a broader shift in Latin American geopolitics. By aligning with influential global powers and engaging in international diplomatic discussions, Colombia is positioning itself as an important player in global economic and political affairs.
