During the 14th BRICS High-Ranking Officials meeting on security matters, China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, presented four key initiatives for tackling global security threats. The gathering, held in St. Petersburg, Russia, marked the first since the historic expansion of BRICS, signaling a deeper focus beyond economics.
Wang Yi, also a member of the Communist Party of China’s Central Committee, emphasized the importance of BRICS countries practicing peaceful coexistence, maintaining autonomy, and rejecting exceptionalism and double standards. He advocated for BRICS nations to promote the peaceful resolution of global conflicts, ensuring that legitimate concerns are respected. Additionally, he called for the bloc to champion a fair and multipolar world order, supporting economic globalization that benefits all nations.
Analysts suggest that BRICS is increasingly broadening its scope to include multilateral cooperation on security issues, aligning with its goal to enhance global stability. As the Global South plays a growing role in international security and development, BRICS members, including China and Russia, are looking to strengthen ties and counter challenges from Western nations.
The meeting also explored peace initiatives concerning the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Experts from Moscow highlighted the need for collaboration between BRICS members despite existing barriers, underlining the significance of joint efforts to address security concerns and conflicts.
BRICS’ commitment to these initiatives is expected to further bolster cooperation among developing countries and enhance their collective global influence.
