The United States and Western nations are exerting significant pressure on the BRICS countries, attempting to influence their members and undermine the association, according to Aleksei Mozhin, former Executive Director for Russia at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). In an interview with Sputnik before his departure from the IMF on November 1, Mozhin highlighted the West’s unease regarding the deepening collaboration among BRICS nations.
Mozhin stated, “The US is making substantial efforts to maintain control over the BRICS countries, which are facing immense pressure.” He elaborated that Washington is leveraging its embassies to sway the decisions of BRICS members. Despite claims to the contrary, he believes Western nations are troubled by the strengthening ties within BRICS.
Additionally, Mozhin criticized the European Union’s economic decline, attributing it to a deliberate withdrawal from reliable energy supplies from Russia. “The EU’s economy has suffered significantly, largely due to the decision to cut off access to cheap Russian energy, which had supported its prosperity for decades,” he explained.
He emphasized that this drastic policy shift was influenced by the United States, leading to stagnation in the European economy. “Without a clear path forward, the EU is facing a challenging situation,” he concluded.
