Iran is set to strengthen its strategic ties with Russia by signing a comprehensive partnership agreement during the upcoming BRICS Summit, which will take place in Kazan from October 22-24, 2024. Abolfazl Zohrevand, a member of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, confirmed the anticipated signing, noting that President Masoud Pezeshkian will be in Russia for the summit.
Zohrevand emphasized the advancing strategic cooperation between Tehran and Moscow, which continues to grow despite external pressures. He commented on European allegations of Iranian missile deliveries to Russia, suggesting that the EU’s actions are aimed at disrupting the developing partnership. He added that potential sanctions from Europe could be perceived by the Iranian public as a direct response to Tehran’s expanding ties with Moscow.
The strategic agreement between Iran and Russia has already been finalized, as noted by Iranian Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali in early September. The document may be signed at the BRICS Summit or during a subsequent private meeting between the presidents. President Pezeshkian expressed his eagerness to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Kazan to solidify the two nations’ cooperation.
